Democratic Leaders Call on Corporations to Defend Voting
Republicans Poised to Pass Sweeping Election Reforms
Orlando, FL- Central Florida Democratic Party leaders are holding a press conference Wednesday, April 7, 2021 at 2:00pm across from the Orange County Supervisor of Elections Office at 130 West Kaley Street in Orlando. Orange County Democratic Party Chair Wes Hodge will be joined by Brevard County Democratic Party Chair Pamela Castellana, Osceola County Democratic Party Chair Jemma Marie-Hanson, and Seminole County Democratic Party Chair Lynn “Moira” Dictor to call on Florida’s leading businesses to stand with Floridians and oppose the measures being proposed by the Republican-controlled Florida Legislature regarding Florida’s election process.
In his State of the State address, Governor Ron DeSantis said, “Florida ran perhaps the most transparent and efficient election in the nation in 2020.” If that was the case, then why is the Florida Legislators trying to make voting in Florida more difficult? SB 90 and HB 7041 would both immediately invalidate nearly 6 MILLION Floridian’s requests for vote by mail ballots! It would double the amount of work for Florida’s Supervisor of Elections’ staff and make voting by mail much more difficult for some of Florida’s most vulnerable citizens.
We are asking the 15 largest corporate donors, who donated nearly $6.5 million to Florida’s Republican Party and their candidates in 2020, to join us in opposing ANY efforts to restrict voting in Florida. After “the most transparent and efficient election” these changes are completely unwarranted. Additionally, if the Republican-controlled Legislature and Governor enact this legislation, we are asking these corporations to pledge no additional donations to the Republican Party of Florida as well as any legislator who voted for these bills in BOTH 2022 and 2024. The donors we are calling upon to act are Walt Disney World, Duke Energy, Florida Power & Light, TECO Energy, Florida Realtors, Comcast, Spectrum, NBC/Universal, Florida Blue, Publix, Walmart, ABC Liquors, Anheuser-Busch, AMSCOT, and AT&T.
