If you are outraged by recurrent police brutality, it is time to ACT! It is time to write to your representatives and advocate for reform. Below you will find an open letter you can send to your elected officials.
Option 1: Resistbot
- With Resistbot, you can contact federal and state officials within 5 minutes! Unfortunately, there is no option to contact local officials.
Option 2: Look up your officials
- Although we all live in Seminole County, our local officials differ by city and district. Consider contacting your city’s mayor, city commissioners, or Seminole County commissioners.
Once you locate your officials, you can use the open letter below. The letter calls for reforms advocated by Campaign Zero, the police reform campaign started by Black Lives Matter. Thanks for taking action, and remember to share with a friend!
Dear [INSERT NAME OF REPRESENTATIVE],
Our state and our nation are in anguish from issues stemming from police use of force and systemic racism. The areas we can address to improve relations are so numerous that thinking about it alone is overwhelming. Which policies will you be bringing to the table to help fix this problem?
Will you seek to enhance community participation and oversight?
Will you move to end the overprotection of officers performing reckless and unlawful acts by amending the law enforcement bill of rights and other statutes to protect whistleblowers?
Will you implement policy to establish better training, require a duty to intervene, or use of body cams?
Will you support the prohibition of the excessive use of force, no-knock warrants, broken window policing, racial profiling and stop and frisk?
Will you seek to establish standards requiring exhaustion of de-escalation methods and warnings before shooting?
Will you help implement requirements regarding reporting all use of force?
What will you do to help put an end to needless loss of human life?
