The Seminole County Democratic Executive Committee stands firmly for freedom, democracy, and the protection of our friends in Ukraine. Unfortunately, the February 28th meeting between Donald Trump and President Zelenskyy was yet another alarming display of Trump’s disregard for our global commitments and his continued un-American appeasement of authoritarian leaders.
Rather than standing with Ukraine in its defense, we believe Trump’s actions signal weakness in the face of Russia’s invasion, which will encourage aggressors and prioritize amateurish diplomacy.
This isn’t about even-handed negotiation—it’s about bending to Putin’s interests at the expense of democratic values and international security. Our allied leaders in France and the United Kingdom have already corrected Trump’s glaring lies about their own support for Ukraine. We know President Trump often distorts reality to fit his narrative, but millions of human lives are at stake here. His reckless misrepresentations of these facts are dangerous, and it undermines fundamental American values.
Furthermore, most US aid going to Ukraine is bought from US suppliers, which creates jobs here at home. The consequences of Trump’s careless behavior will not be limited to Ukraine. It will be felt here as well.
America should be leading in the fight for democracy, not abandoning those on the front lines. We urge our leaders to reaffirm our commitment to Ukraine, our democratic allies, and the founding principles that define the United States of America as a free nation. Our ancestors during the Great Depression helped our European friends fend off Hitler early in World War II. We must do the same now, or we dishonor their honor and sacrifice.
Seminole County Democrats will continue to speak out against this corruption, and stand for the values that make our nation strong.
