Anti-Union Bill Passes in the House

A measure opponents see as targeting Florida teachers’ unions has passed the Republican led Florida House and been sent to the first of four Senate committees for consideration.

“Anti-labor House Bill 11, is now Senate Bill 1292,” says Seminole Democratic Party Union Outreach Chairman Jay Jurie. “This bill would devastate public sector unions by requiring them to obtain unrealistically high membership numbers before they would be recognized as collective bargaining agents.”

The measure, introduced by Rep.Scott Plakon, R-Longwood, passed the House March 30, 2017 on a 75 – 41 mainly party-line vote.

Time is Running Out, But …

Jurie sees the bill’s assignment to four committees for review as a sign the measure is not likely to get traction in the Senate. Even though time is running out in the session, Jurie calls on Democrats to “let the Commerce and Tourism Committee know that you oppose this bill.”
