Gubernatorial Candidate King Set for May Meeting

King, Running for Governor of Florida in 2018

Winter Park businessman Chris King, who announced his candidacy for the Democratic gubernatorial nomination in early April, will be the guest speaker at the May 11th General Meeting of the Seminole County Democratic Party, 7 pm at the Lake Mary Community Center, 140 E. Wilbur Ave.

“This is a great time in the election cycle because we’re able to have each like-minded candidate come in and get some face to face time with our members and guests,” says SemDem’s spokesman Brent Kimball. “It’s the time to share ideas, meet new people, and begin to build energy towards the elections.”

The field of potential and announced candidates reflects the changing dynamic of Florida’s Democratic Party. Tallahassee Mayor Andrew Gillum was the first prominent candidate to jump into the race. Miami Beach Mayor Phil Levine is reported to be testing the waters for a run as well. Former Congresswoman Gwen Graham and Central Florida attorney John Morgan have both been mentioned in news reports as potential contenders.

“We will invite all Democratic candidates to come in and make their case,” says Kimball.

Not only will this help Democrats make choices for the Primary, but it could be a source of campaign workers for the candidates. Hundreds of newly energized Democrats have been turning out for the monthly SemDem meetings since the November election, looking for ways to get involved in the process.

“Well, this is the process,” says Kimball. “First we get to meet the candidates, get a take on what they’re all about, then we select from candidates in the primaries, and then we all work together to get them elected.”

Sign-in of members and guests and ‘meet and greet’ with the chairs of SemDem’s standing committees and clubs will begin at 7 in the center’s ‘small room’. The talk and Q&A with King will follow in the center’s bigger hall. Again, everyone is encouraged to car-pool to the center if possible to ease the parking crunch.
